Pimpri Chinchwad is the north western city limits of Pune, spread over 181 sq. km. The neighbourhood is home to extensive industry and is well known for its automotive, IT and manufacturing industry. PCMC is home to the Indian operations of major automobile companies.

Pimpri-Chinchwad RTO has registered 5875 electric vehicles till July 2021 out of which 332 4-wheelers and 4978 2-wheelers, have been registered under Pimpri-Chinchwad RTO between 2018 to September 2021. While developing EVCI for a region, traffic congestion points need to be considered. The project team studied the traffic congestion points, also validating the intersections that have highest traffic flow. A maximum of 150,000 vehicles are reported to be passing through the high traffic spots in an hour in the CMP in 2018. It started with a total no. of 50 sites, these were a combination of sites added by PCMC and a list of sites developed by MP Ensystems based on convenience, traffic demand management and the revenue opportunities.
